This calculator assumes one specific, common situation: you're baking the exact same amount of batter the recipe makes, just in a pan of a different size than the one specified. Change the pan's area without changing the batter volume and the layer gets thinner in a bigger pan, or thicker in a smaller one — and that change in thickness, not the pan's area by itself, is what actually drives how long the cake needs in the oven. This calculator computes the same pan-area ratio used by our Cake Pan Size Converter, then converts that area ratio into a depth ratio (since depth changes inversely with area for a fixed batter volume). Because area itself grows with the square of a pan's linear dimension, even a modest change in diameter turns into a much larger change in area than the diameter alone would suggest — that's the "not linear" part.
A real cake isn't a perfectly uniform slab of pure conductive material, though — it also gains heat by convection from the oven air at its exposed top and edges, not just by conduction up from the pan below, its crumb structure changes as it sets, and oven behavior (fan vs. conventional, hot spots, calibration) adds its own variance on top of the math. Scaling the bake time by the depth ratio directly overstates the real effect (it would imply doubling the pan area halves the bake time, which is far more than bakers actually see in practice), so this tool dampens that ratio to a level calibrated against typical baker guidance — roughly a 20% shorter time for a doubled pan area, or a 28% longer time for a halved one — rather than either a straight 1:1 scaling or an even steeper pure-conduction estimate. It's a reasonable, physically grounded starting point, not a guarantee. Professional bakers and recipe developers still test for doneness rather than trusting a clock alone, and you should too. Treat any number this tool gives you as the point to start checking, not the point to take the cake out.
